2011 Summer Training

Every year officials ask what they can do to improve their ranking, skills, schedule and post season opportunity.  They ask how they can they learn three person crew mechanics necessary to successfully officiate beyond regular season HS games.

As much as the LA Unit and all HS units throughout California provide training for their membership, it is not and cannot be the sole vehicle to become a top official in the unit, state or get college ready.  To become successful, personal time with commitment to improving and learning the necessary skills and philosophy with exposure to the appropriate audience who you seek to impress must be invested outside the unit training period. YES, you must do more on your own.  During the offseason recreational basketball (rec ball) leagues can serve various purposes if appropriately utilized.  The financial supplement of “rec ball” obviously is well understood and sought by many, but the relaxed attention to mechanics, hustle and call selection too often stymie’s the skills instead of sharpens them.  Therefore, one should take the opportunity during these “rec ball” games to practice as much as you can.  Individual mechanics, communication, hustle and improved call selection can easily be improved. As much as switching and other crew mechanics are desirable, they don’t always work well with “rec ball”, it would reduce actual playing time with running clock format.

However, all is not lost.  There are many independent training camps out there for both HS and NCAA that will provide wonderful opportunity for learning, improving and showcasing your skills.  Other things you can engage in include mentoring and networking with other officials. Stay current on LA Unit and Referee events.  Referee magazine, NFHS, CBOA and LA Unit website all combine to give you much information on the current affairs of basketball.  Read the rulebook. Don’t wait until the fall when training starts to review and improve your rule knowledge and case play understanding.

Lastly, to help with records of your development, please send me you’re offseason accomplishments. If you went to camp, worked spring and summer HS/NCAA/Pro-Am leagues, we want to know.  Of great value will be knowledge of any games that use three person mechanics.  Which mechanics (HS/NCAA men or women and  Pro) were used and was there any responsible evaluation provided and by who.  As we continue to assess our unit officials, we look for officials who are working to improvement themselves and especially those who have three person experiences.

Bobby, I and several LA Unit veteran officials often serve many camps as staff clinicians.

If you let me know where you will be, we’ll keep an eye for you. And you’ll never know, one of us just might show up to watch you or we can contact the camp coordinator for feedback.  Any certificate as proof of attendance should be sent to me so I can update your unit profile.

Have a great summer.
