June 18, 2011

Dear Current or Prospective CBOA LA Unit member,

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to congratulate you on taking the first step in becoming a member of the California Basketball Officials Association, Los Angeles (CBOA-LA). This upcoming season will prove to be one of the best! The Board has been working with John Lozano, the units Instructional Chair, to improve the instructional program, helping you develop into the best official that you can be. Highlights will include more observations, as well as the ability to digitally video tape officials at both, tournaments and during regular observations. Officials will be given a DVD of their games to study, helping to improve performance. There will also be more opportunities for officials to work more games using 3-person mechanics, throughout the regular season.

The registration process has changed.
Please read through all registration-related documents completely and carefully.

Registration is now open! The dues for the upcoming 2011 – 2012 basketball season will be $130.00. This year, there will be a $70.00 penalty for ALL registration forms and dues received after the due date. All registration information for new and returning members can be found on the Registration Form . For returning members, payment of dues will not be accepted at any meeting. Dues (and late fees) must be paid in full in order to be considered for assignments and qualify for NASO insurance.

This year’s registration process requires three components:

1) Fill out the membership application at http://www.cboa.net/losangeles/newMemberApplication.cgi . ALL new and returning members must fill out the online application form, completely. This information will be sent to NASO for insurance and mailing publications.

2) Fill out and print the registration form at www.labasketballunit.org if you have not yet done so. This site is used for posting unit information.

3)       From above, print and send the completed registration form, along with your dues to the address below. Refer to the membership guidelines document for the returned check policy.

Make your check or money order payable to:

CBOA Los Angeles Unit

P.O. Box 56573

Los Angeles, CA 90056

The last day to join the Los Angeles Unit is Saturday October 22, 2011. Please not that you must have attended at least one LA Unit meeting as of October 22, 2011.

All instructional materials/kits will be distributed on Saturday, October 8, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
at the State Farm Office located at 6261 Bristol Pkwy Culver City, CA 90230. If you are not available, you can make arrangements to have your kit picked up for you in your absence.

This year the meeting date format has been modified. Only one make-up meeting will be offered ; no January meeting is scheduled; and all members must attend TWO floor practicals: one for two-person crews and one for three-person crews.

The 2011 – 2012 high school basketball season will have fewer games offered. Most of the Freshman/Sophmore season has been eliminated and JV/Varsity schedules are expected to be reduced. As a result, assignments will hinge more on members who meet ALL qualification requirements paired with their respective rating. More on this will be made available at www.labasketballunit.org as the policy becomes more refined by the LA Unit board.

Thank you for your membership to the California Basketball Officials Association, Los Angeles Unit! I look forward to seeing you in October. Stay positive, stay healthy, and have a great season!

Sincerely,

Julie Armendariz

Los Angeles Unit Secretary
